Glorifying YOUR WORKLOAD Can COST You DEARLY!

One of my seniors at the workplace had this annoying habit – he had nothing more to say than “HOW BUSY HE WAS!“. The story was the same irrespective of time of the day, across different seasons or the kind of gathering. He looked like the stressed-out professional who perpetually wears their workload on their sleeve.

Initially, I felt he was the blue-eyed boy of the Senior Management, always in demand, and everyone around respected him. But the reality was just the opposite. No one wanted to be around him.

Boasting about work stress harms the doer and the receiver.

For senior leaders, this constant state of overwhelm can have a ripple effect, impacting not just their well-being, but also the morale and productivity of those around them.

Here’s the truth:

Chronic stress is a double-edged sword.

While it can temporarily boost alertness, prolonged exposure hinders both personal and professional growth.

Personal Growth Stagnation:

Constant stress narrows our focus. We become so fixated on immediate problems that we lose sight of long-term goals and personal development. Hobbies, relationships, and self-care fall by the wayside.

Professional Growth Plateau:

Innovation and creativity thrive in a relaxed, open environment. When a leader is consumed by stress, their decision-making becomes reactive, stifling new ideas and hindering team collaboration.

Can it be completely avoided?

The truth is that workload stress is part of growing up. It cannot be completely avoided. However, we shouldn’t make it permanent or our DNA. Rather we should embrace the highs and lows.

How to break free from this cycle?

A few things you can consider:

Identify the Source

Not all stress is created equal. Pinpointing the root cause – workload, lack of delegation, or a toxic work environment – is crucial.

Set Boundaries

Establish clear boundaries between work and personal life. Disconnecting after work hours and scheduling downtime for relaxation are essential.

Delegate and Empower

Delegating tasks and empowering his team will free up his time and allow him to focus on higher-level projects.

Embrace Mindfulness

Techniques like meditation and deep breathing can help manage stress in the moment, promoting overall well-being.

Seek Support

Sometimes, professional help is needed. A coach can provide you with tools to manage stress and develop healthier coping mechanisms.

Remember, prioritizing well-being isn’t a sign of weakness.

It’s a sign of strength and a catalyst for growth. A leader who manages stress effectively becomes not just more productive but also fosters a positive and productive work environment for everyone.
