A negotiation is a balancing act. It is a two-way process. One should carry it out well. No one wants to lose out.
An interview experience. Read on.
I interviewed a bright MBA guy with 5+ years of workex.
I was looking for someone to join my #strategy team.
I had no doubts that he was the right fit.
I worked with #HR to roll out the offer in under two days which was not the norm.
He received the offer but did not provide immediate acceptance.
He cited a medical emergency and asked for more time when HR called him.
After two weeks, he called me – “Rahul, I have a better offer in hand. The salary is X% higher than your offer. Can we discuss?”
I said, “Please accept that offer.”
I never tried to find if he really had a medical emergency or just bought time to bargain with another employer.
He decided to do what he wished.
After two years, he came back and asked if I had a vacancy in my team.
I asked him one question, “How do I know you won’t do the same thing again?”
He kept quiet. Later he sent an apology message to me.
“Negotiation is important. One needs to get the best value. Yet, it should be reasonable and fair for both sides. If one side takes the other for a ride, trust breaks down, and so does the deal”.
