Put talent before oneself

Good talent requires nurturing. Share a vision with them. However, if you cannot offer a path, let them create their own path.

An interview experience. Read on.

I received a CV from a close connection.

I liked the CV as it had a good experience and was a CFA charter holder.

The HR scheduled the interaction.

I was thoroughly impressed by him.

Mind said to get him on board. Heart said to let him go.

I decided NOT to hire him.

After a few days, I spoke to him and informed him about my decision.

I conveyed that I would love to get him on board, but he will do well in an investment role.

He took my feedback well and kept me informed about his job search.

I kept guiding him.

He landed a job with a fund house.

He called me after a few months.

He thanked me for helping him to get to his dream role.

“Leadership is not about grabbing the best talent to create a dream team. It is about letting go if that is best for the talent.”
