I stayed at the company-provided guest house. The consulting engagement kept me away from home at least five days a week.
After dinner, I caught up with my wife on the phone. It was past 10 p.m. After a full day at the client’s office, my real work was about to start.
I sat on the bed and started drafting the presentation strawman. There was only a week left for the final presentation. Stress was building up by the minute.
Failure would mean:
1] High probability of getting fired.
2] Career setback.
3] Inability to repay home loan.
4] Lower standard of living.
5] Future uncertainty about jobs.
My mind was racing uncontrollably in all directions. The negative thoughts were triggering a sinking feeling.
I told myself, “Let’s focus on what I can do and leave the rest to god.”
For the next four hours, I worked on drafting the V0.1 of the presentation. At 2 a.m., I was feeling confident and went to sleep.
The next morning felt much better – my framework was ready.
I doubled down on the presentation and worked extremely hard for the next few days to finish strong.
The final presentation went well with minor feedback from the client.
Those four hours set the tone for the next week and the outcome.
