“I was a weekend dad and husband.”
I am sure some consultants travelling five days a week can relate to this statement.
My usual week was:
1] Monday: Get up at 4 AM, reach the airport by 5 AM and travel to client city.
2] Monday to Friday: Stayed in a hotel at the client’s location and worked on the project.
3] Friday – Leave for the airport at 6 PM. Catch a flight and reach your home city by mid-night.
4] Saturday – Recover from weekend fatigue. Occasionally, travel for a day for business development.
5] Sunday – Take the family out for lunch/dinner or a mall. Prepare my bag for Monday morning.
To some, the life looked high-flying. I enjoyed it till one fine day, I realized that I had to make a choice.
The choice was difficult – Giving up a successful consulting career or moving to a role in the industry that provided location stability.
I met a senior who was coach-like, and I trusted him. He asked me a few questions. It made me introspect. The coaching conversation provided Clarity and Decision-Making capability.
Rest is history. I had a successful corporate career and never regretted leaving the consulting world.
Lessons learned:
1] Ask for help when you are in two minds
2] There is no generic answer to a question. It is about you.
3] Clarity gives confidence.
As a coach, I work with clients who wish to make different transitions. I have realized that every person and situation is unique. The roadmap that emerges post-coaching helps my clients to move ahead confidently.
