I love my Casio watch. I bought it from Best Buy in the US. I have a few watches, but my hand unconsciously picks the Casio.
A couple of years ago, I gifted a smartwatch to my son on his birthday. After a month of use, he said, “Dad, you should also get a smartwatch. It has so many features. It also helps monitor your basic health parameters.”
I said, “I am happy with my Casio.” The conversation got closed.
A few months later, he nudged me again. I said, “I don’t need this change of watch. I am happy with mine.”
He was persistent and kept nudging me now and then.
I gave up and said, “Can we share? Do you mind me using yours during my daily walks?”
He agreed promptly. I started using it and started loving it over time. I was able to get a summary of my workouts.
I also figured out that my son was happy as he got to the leaderboard in our area due to the additional step counts.
It was a win-win.
This experience helped me realize a few things about how we act at work:
1] We resist change – role, location, department, function and good managers.
2] We stay in our comfort zone till the time we see some benefits or if shit starts flowing over the roof.
3] Sometimes, small nudges over a period of time help us get started.
4] We discover new things if we let our curiosity work.
5] When we get stuck on the “My Way or High Way” approach, we lose many better things that come the other way.
Pic: I still use my Casio on a few morning walks. Old nuts are hard to crack completely! 🙂
