Career trajectories can be very different for different professionals. Initial years are always exciting and come with a steep learning curve. A combination of attitude, skill, and knowledge makes high growth easy.
After one moves closer to 15 years of work experience, things start changing. From an individual contributor, you are now a high-potential asset. You are responsible for self, others, and for driving business growth.
You may end up with four possible growth paths post this stage:

1. High Growth: A sure shot entry into the leadership cadre of the firm leading to future CxO roles. A priced catch for competition.
2. Normal Growth: Trajectory is upward. It may not lead to CxO roles in the firm. One can move out and explore the CxO role in the market.
3. Stagnation: Trajectory is flat. You survive and keep chugging along. No takers in the market either unless you know someone who pulls you.
4. Irrelevance: Trajectory is downward. Possibility to get kicked out of the workforce. One may end up having no jobs in the future.
5. A fifth possibility is going for a second career. It is either due to an inner drive to make an impact or because irrelevance has struck.
Each path has entry criteria.
Each path requires different readiness.
Each path impacts work-life balance differently.
You may have immense potential, but you need the readiness to navigate the growth paths.
Look inside before pursuing a path vigorously.
PS: these arcs themselves would in reality have peaks/troughs but are directionally consistent.
