Career Growth is closely linked to Self Development

career growth

Our career growth depends on many factors – some are in our direct control while others are not. Mostly we attribute our slow or low growth to external factors like the manager’s view of us, company performance, industry growth, and in some cases biases in the performance management process.

While we can remain worried about these factors, we need to focus on factors that we can work with. Self-Development is a predominant factor that is in our Locus of Control. Our mindset towards the same often determines our Career Path.

The figure below depicts the “GROWTH-DEVELOPMENT MATRIX“. It plots Career-Growth on the Y-axis and Self-Development on the X-axis.

Growth-Development Matrix

Understanding the Growth-Development Matrix

1) ZONE OF EXCELLENCE: While most of us want to be here, rarely does one stay here for long. The mindset that propels you ahead is, “What Next?”

2) ZONE OF COMPLACENCY: We take things a bit easy here as we are getting growth anyways. When we stay here for too long and reflect one day, we end up with, “I Missed” some remarkable opportunities.

3) ZONE OF IRRELEVANCE: It is the most difficult zone to be in. Motivation is a major issue here and we often lament, “I Wish” I should have done a few things.

4) ZONE OF COMEBACK: One feels upbeat here as they have got their mojo back by focusing on the right goals. They march ahead with a mindset, “I Will” make a difference.

A career journey is a marathon. Sooner or later, you will find yourself in one of these zones. It would be great to learn from your career journey about your experience and strategy in any of these zones.
