TCS has been delaying the joining of lateral hires.
It is a new industry trend. What does it mean for you?
In 2002, my joining as a fresher was delayed by four months. I was a sitting duck, waiting endlessly for the joining letter. Those four months were the toughest to navigate.
Historically, freshers have been on the receiving end of joining delays. However, the recent trend shows that even laterals are getting impacted.
Laterals used to always join on time and even stayed on the bench for a substantial period till they could be deployed on projects.
Gone are those days. A single day of non-billable resources puts pressure on margins. Now, laterals are interviewed by the services firm and the client teams. Hence, they join and get deployed on the project in the first week.
Unfortunately, business environments have been lacklustre. Firms are trying to optimize their bottom line. Delayed joining helps them save on costs.
How about the lateral joiners?
Negative Side: You will be under financial pressure for a few months and all gains this year against the hike will be lost. It is a bitter pill but has to be swallowed.
Note: Always have an 18-24 months running expense emergency corpus.
Positive Side: In a bad market, you still have an offer in hand that should convert into a job.
Remember, you cannot optimize everything when you make career transition decisions in a bad market. Staying calm and patient is important.
What can you do now?
1] Try to interview in other places
2] Upskill on the Technical/Functional side
3] Build Leadership skills
Note: 2 & 3 will need investment but it will make you market relevant.
