My engineering days were the toughest but most satisfying times of my life. I was living on a shoestring budget. I did not have the luxury to ask for financial help from home.
Juggling textbooks, early-morning study sessions, and the gnawing pressure of financial independence – that was my life as a young engineering student.
It was then that tutoring struck me as a way to not just survive financially, but also to thrive. Little did I know, those tutoring sessions would become a turning point in my journey to independence.
Here’s how:
Financial Freedom:
The extra income from tutoring was a lifeline. It allowed me to breathe easier, pay the bills on time, and even afford the occasional celebratory Biryani. This financial independence gave me a sense of control and empowered me to focus on my studies without the constant worry about money.
Confidence Boost:
As I explained complex concepts to my students, I realized I had a strong grasp of the material. Seeing the “aha!” moment on their faces after my explanation filled me with a newfound confidence in my abilities. It wasn’t just about the knowledge; it was about the ability to communicate effectively and guide others.
Communication Skills:
Tutoring honed my communication skills like nothing else. I learned to break down complex concepts into simpler terms, tailor my explanations to different learning styles, and answer questions patiently. This ability to communicate clearly and concisely has been invaluable throughout my engineering career.
Patience and Empathy:
Facing frustrated students taught me immense patience. I learned to identify where their struggles stemmed from and tailor my approach accordingly. This instilled in me a deep sense of empathy, a quality that allows me to collaborate effectively with colleagues and understand client needs better.
Time Management:
Juggling classes, tutoring sessions, and a personal life forced me to become a master of time management. I learned to prioritize tasks, schedule efficiently, and maximize every minute of my day. This skill has proven crucial in handling the demanding workload of the engineering world.
Those tutoring sessions weren’t just about earning money; they were an investment in myself. Today, as a Founder, I wear multiple hats and juggle multiple priorities. Every time I feel stuck or out of steam, I remember my younger self going through those days of struggle. It leaves me with newfound motivation.
By the way, if you are wondering, how much I earn through tutoring – it was Rs. 1000 per month, but enough for my bus fare to college, canteen food and budget to buy second-hand engineering books.
The end result of four years of constant hardship – I graduated as a University Gold Medalist in Engineering. Even if I didn’t get a medal, I would still be very happy with how I built my life in those four years.
Summarizing it, I just wish to share the below quote:
“Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all.” – Dale Carnegie
If it feels like giving up, just keep going.
