Can Work Be the Best Part of Your Day?

I took a leap of faith to join an Industry role in a leadership position while leaving behind my Consulting life. Consulting was a rewarding journey. Moving to an unknown territory was way out of my comfort zone.

It took a year or so and a lot of good mentoring from my boss to understand the success factors. Gradually, I started taking my game to the next level.

Around 18 months into my new role, I started enjoying every moment of the job. I couldn’t wait for the next day to arrive. I wanted to get back to the office and get high on action.

I LOVED MY JOB!!

MY JOB GAVE ME MY DOSE OF DOPAMINE!

One of those days, I was sharing my joy with one of my team members over a chai break. He inquired, “What makes you so happy while working so hard? You never look forward to a vacation? How about your family life?”

For many, the idea of loving their job feels like a distant dream. But what if it wasn’t? What if work could be a source of fulfilment, challenge, and even joy?

The truth is, many people do love their jobs, and it’s not just about the paycheck. Here are some key factors that contributed to my feelings:

  • Purpose and Passion: When your work aligns with your values and interests, it becomes more than just a job. You feel connected to something bigger and find meaning in what you do.
  • Challenge and Growth: A good job offers opportunities to learn and develop new skills. Stepping outside your comfort zone and mastering new things keeps you engaged and motivated.
  • Impact and Contribution: Do you feel your work makes a difference? Whether it’s helping clients, solving problems, or creating something new, feeling like your contribution matters is a powerful motivator.
  • Positive Work Culture: Great colleagues, supportive managers, and a positive work environment can significantly impact your experience. Feeling valued, respected, and part of a team fosters a sense of belonging and enjoyment.
  • Work-Life Balance: Having clear boundaries between work and personal life helps prevent burnout and allows you to bring your best self to both areas.

Loving your job isn’t just about finding the perfect fit; it’s also about creating it. By reflecting on these factors and advocating for yourself, you can turn work from a chore into a source of satisfaction and achievement.

These five factors were working for me.

What has been your greatest motivation at work?

PS: One of the perks of a job is to meet interesting people on your journey. I met Michelin Starred Chef Vineet Bhatia MBE on one of those office trips to Dubai.
