Learning to say No is a skill and an art. When we avoid saying No, we pay the price. Learning to say in corporate may not be easy but possible.
Below is a short incident from my corporate life. Read on.
—————————————
My long vacation was starting the next day.
My manager asked me to put together a report.
As always, it was super important and urgent.
I created the first draft in two hours and went to him for review.
He said he was busy and asked me to wait.
I kept waiting. Many hours went by.
The clock was hitting 6 PM. I had a flight to catch at 10 PM.
I knocked on his door again.
He reviewed, paused, and then yelled at me.
My stress level peaked.
He made me wait for the whole day without feedback.
Now he went all guns blazing.
In the next two hours, I did two more iterations.
I asked my family to come to the airport directly.
I was working throughout my flight.
After reaching the hotel, I sent the final version at 3 AM. It didn’t get over.
During the entire vacation, I was working on the report.
The family was pissed with me. I was pissed with my life. Felt like a total failure.
That day, I realized –
“Unless you learn to say No, you will be royally screwed forever.”
