As a consultant, I would do a lot of road trips between Mumbai – Pune – Mumbai. Client work or a proposal presentation made me take the Expressway.
I will take a pit stop at the usual toll plaza. There is a small shop at the plaza that sells items of home utility. These you don’t get in the city shops. I will always buy something or the other just out of curiosity.
On one of those trips, I asked the shopkeeper, “Your items are moderately priced. How do you make money?”
He said, “Sir, my shop has high visibility and footfall. People buy something or the other. Across the day, I sell enough products to keep me going.”
I kept thinking about what he said. Everything he said made sense when I related it to my professional life.
1] Visibility:
If our work is visible to stakeholders, we have a rewarding experience. It leads to better recognition, quality of work and even better compensation.
2] Footfall:
If more people know us in an organization, we are better connected. We are aware of projects, people and the culture of the organization. We have all the ingredients to thrive.
3] Small Achievements:
It is not those glorious moments of getting a big break but small achievements at work that add up. They give us confidence and a sense of fulfilment. They are like the little margin on many products that add up for this person.
Life can teach us so many lessons through interactions we make every day. We should be perceptive and imaginative. We should abstract the learnings and apply them to our lives.
