Corporate and Accountability

Yesterday, I was walking my dog in the morning. I did not see the security person around at the tower entrance. Later in the day, I checked and found the person. I confronted him about his absence.

He explained that he had just arrived and that it was his supervisor’s responsibility to ensure someone was there. The supervisor mentioned that he had identified someone, but they did not show up or inform him.

As an end customer, I felt frustrated and helpless. The security team ping-ponged the issue. No one was finally accountable.

In corporate, I can relate to many similar scenarios:

1] Line managers give a seemingly impossible target to achieve without any accountability for how one can achieve it.

2] Firms hire candidates from the market promising a role. They make them do a different role once they join.

3] People sabotage the growth opportunities of others if they don’t comply with their group norms

There are many more examples where the accountability rests on none. However, the suffering comes to the employee.

In my opinion, three qualities matter in such a situation:

1] Courage: to face things
2] Resilience: to not allow temporary setbacks to affect us
3] Perseverance: not dropping the ball no matter what

We will face troubles, but these qualities will help us navigate.

What other qualities have helped you navigate organizational complexities?
