The Superstar Boss Who Never Took People Along!

A friend narrated this story a few days ago. He is part of an MNC of high repute. He started this job around a year ago. In the firm, whenever there were talks about leadership benchmarks, one name came up.

This leader reported to the CEO and was the blue-eyed one. He has delivered solid financial performance every year for the last many years. He was relatively younger and quite dynamic.

His reputation reached before he entered the room.

My friend was intrigued and wanted to work under this leader. He reached out to a few seniors to figure it out.

What he heard from them made him reconsider his decisions.

Many who have worked under this leader felt unhappy.

While the leader has grown exponentially, the people under him haven’t grown well.

They found the leader quite transactional. He was focused on getting the work done but hardly spent time coaching them.

We all dream of working with a brilliant leader, someone whose natural talent inspires awe. But here’s a secret:

A truly invested, even “average,” leader might be the key to your long-term success.

Think about it this way: imagine a team sport. A Michael Jordan-level talent might single-handedly win a few games. But what about building a championship team? That requires a coach who understands each player’s strengths and weaknesses, pushes them to improve, and fosters a collaborative spirit.

This is where the “average” leader with a deep interest in development shines.

Who is an average but committed leader?

They might not have all the answers, but their commitment to your growth is the fuel that propels you forward. They’ll:

  • Provide clear direction and expectations: They set the goals, but also involve you in the planning process, fostering ownership.
  • Offer regular feedback: They don’t shy away from constructive criticism but frame it in a way that helps you learn and grow.
  • Empower you to take risks: They create a safe space for experimentation, understanding that failures are stepping stones to success.
  • Champion your development: They’ll advocate for training opportunities, stretch assignments, and invest in your skillset.

Skin in the Game: Why Investment Matters

Leadership is a two-way street. When a leader shows genuine interest in your growth, it creates a sense of reciprocity. You feel valued, motivated to contribute your best, and invested in the team’s overall success. It’s the “skin in the game” that separates a transactional boss from a true leader.

So, the next time you’re evaluating leadership, don’t just be dazzled by raw talent. Look for someone who sees your potential and is committed to helping you reach it. That, my friends, is the recipe for a winning team.
