There are many definitions of Leadership. However, one common theme is that Leadership is about others as much as it is about oneself.
One small anecdote about Leadership from one of my interview experiences. Read on.
————————————————-
He approached me through LinkedIn and gave the reference of a good friend.
I checked with my friend. Got good feedback.
I had a role open in my team and interviewed him.
He was not a good fit for a strategy profile.
He said politely, “I know I haven’t done well, but if you feel I can be a good fit anywhere else, please help me.”
I was impressed with his honesty, fairness, and assessment of himself.
He could have pushed for this job.
He killed his chances yet displayed a strong character.
He knew things around alliances and business research.
I spoke to three other stakeholders in different teams.
I informed them about my interview experience.
He got hired by one of my peers.
I met him in Bangalore after many years.
I learned that the job changed the trajectory of his career.
He is flourishing now.
He showed immense gratitude towards me.
I felt content, happy, and satisfied seeing his growth.
Leadership is not about – what is in for me. It is rather about what I can do for you. Leadership is not about maximizing for oneself, but making a difference to the ecosystem.
