As a newly minted MBA graduate, I wanted to conquer the corporate world – FAST! I undervalued experience and always emphasized capability.
I was rushing to get more of everything the corporate world could offer.
Yet, life has its way to teach you lessons. I faced a lot of resistance from long-timers in the firm. It impacted my growth. I didn’t realize that I wasn’t investing my time and effort from a long-term perspective. My focus was short-term.
There’s a saying that goes, “Slow and steady wins the race,” and this couldn’t be more true in the corporate world. We’ve all been there – that itch to take shortcuts, chase quick wins, and get that promotion yesterday.
But what we often forget is that true success, the kind that sustains, requires a different approach.
Let’s face it, relationships built on a whim can’t withstand the first storm. The same goes for wealth – easily acquired wealth is rarely cherished or managed wisely. We see this reflected in countless stories of families who lose their fortunes because they didn’t understand the value of what they had.
The Power of Patience and Purpose
The key takeaway? Invest time, effort, and even money strategically. This applies to everything from building trust with colleagues to acquiring new skills. Take certifications, for example. Are you rushing to get that piece of paper just to check a box, or are you genuinely interested in the knowledge and how it can benefit you and your career in the long run?
The same holds true for an MBA. Don’t chase it solely for a quick salary bump. Pursue it because you want to develop the leadership and strategic thinking skills that will propel you forward over time.
Remember, there are countless successful business leaders who didn’t have an MBA – they built their empires through hard work and relationships.
Building a Sustainable Foundation
The allure of a rapid rise to the top is undeniable. But that meteoric ascent can be a lonely journey if you haven’t invested in building strong professional relationships along the way. The support and guidance of colleagues and mentors become invaluable as you navigate the complexities of your career.
Things to Remember
Focus on the “why” behind your goals.
What are you truly trying to achieve? Understanding your purpose will guide your decisions and keep you motivated through the inevitable challenges.
Invest in yourself.
Continuous learning and skill development are essential for long-term career growth. This include hard skills, people skills and leadership skills.
Nurture your network.
Building genuine relationships with colleagues and mentors creates a strong support system that will benefit you throughout your career.
The corporate world may feel like a race at times, but don’t be tempted to cut corners.
Invest in yourself, build strong relationships, and enjoy the journey – that’s the path to true, sustainable success.
Question to Ponder: Do you feel psychologically safe at a workplace where you have strong relationships?
