Life on a notification!

There was a time in my corporate career when staying busy 24X7 made me feel awesome. It may sound contradictory today when we advocate strongly for work-life balance.

Yet, in those days, the feeling of getting importance from senior management seemed more satisfying. It led to rapid career growth. I was doing all the “right things”. The firm reciprocated fairly.

It came at a cost. My attention span has gone down. My patience with people and their ability to deliver results went down. I was living a life driven by notifications – emails, messages, meetings, and reminders. Above all, my health has suffered.

One fine day, everything just cracked. I have earned – power, influence, position, and authority through hard work. It felt nothing. I was happy on the outside but unhappy inside.

I went into a two-week “nothing” break – no vacation, no travel, just staying at home, eating simple food, simple thoughts, no phone/gadgets, no office calls. I spent those days in silence and practised reflection.

I was ready to start fresh with one mantra – “I will NEVER live my life on notifications.” It showed up in my attitude towards work and life. I accepted the tradeoffs as well.

Life was beautiful once again.

Would like to end with a small shayari –
“Kuch paane ki khwahish me itne bhi pagal mat bano,
Kuch paane ki khwahish me itne bhi pagal mat bano,
Ki pata hi na chale,
Kab khud ko hi kho diya.”
